Depression Therapy

Depression doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means you're carrying something heavy. Let's put it down together.

Depression is one of the loneliest experiences, even when you're surrounded by people. It tells you that nothing will change, that you should just push through, that reaching out is pointless. We know that's not true. We also know that even wanting to start therapy can feel like climbing a mountain when you're exhausted.

At Discovery Counseling Austin, we meet you exactly where you are. Not where you think you should be, not where others expect you to be. We work with the weight of depression, the flatness, the disconnect. Our therapists understand that depression is both a feeling and something happening in how you think, how your body feels, what you believe about yourself. We help you find your way back, one step at a time.

Whether you're high-functioning on the outside (and falling apart on the inside), struggling with postpartum mood changes, dealing with depression mixed with anxiety, or just exhausted from pretending you're fine: you belong here. Healing is possible. It doesn't require you to force yourself into positivity. It starts with being honest about how hard this is.

You might be here because...

  • You're exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix

  • Everything feels heavy, pointless, or numb

  • You've lost interest in things you used to love

  • You're going through the motions but not actually living

  • You look fine on the outside but feel empty inside (high-functioning depression is still depression)

  • Your mood shifted after giving birth or during a major life change

  • Depression and anxiety show up together for you

  • You feel like a burden to people you care about

  • You're not sure if this is depression or just a bad phase, but something feels off

We See What Depression Hides

Depression distorts how you see yourself. Our job is to gently point out what it's hiding.

In therapy we’ll uncover your strength, your worth, the parts of you that still matter. We use therapies that work with how depression actually works in your brain and body, not just talk about your feelings.

This is collaborative. You're the expert on your experience. We're the guides who help you find the path forward.

Depression therapy at DCA is never one-size-fits-all. Your therapist may draw from:

  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): Learning to change your relationship with depression rather than fighting it. You don't need to erase the hard feelings. You need to stop letting depression run your life.

  • CBT adapted for depression: Gently working with the thought patterns and behaviors that depression locks you into, without toxic positivity or forcing happiness you don't feel.

  • Mindfulness and somatic work: Reconnecting with your body and the present moment. Depression lives in the past and future. We bring you home to now.

  • Client-centered therapy: Sometimes you need someone to just get it, without the program or the fix. We meet you there.

Your therapist will talk with you about what combination feels right. There's no one-size-fits-all protocol here.

Depression Therapist Austin Texas

Your first session and beyond

We'll ask about your history, what depression feels like for you, what brought you here now. You get to say what's on your mind.

There's no pressure to perform or explain away your pain.

From there, we develop a plan together. Sessions are typically once a week, though you decide what works for your schedule and budget. We offer both virtual and in-person therapy in Austin, and we accept most insurance plans.

The relationship is the therapy

Depression makes you feel alone. Having a therapist who truly understands, who doesn't judge, who gets the specific weight you're carrying, changes everything.

We're careful about matching you with someone whose style fits how you heal. If the fit isn't right, we help you find someone it is.

Questions we hear often

  • Depression usually lasts longer and goes deeper than sadness about a specific event. It affects how you sleep, eat, feel about yourself, and see the future. It's more than mood. It's a shift in how you function and how you relate to life. If you're not sure, that's actually a perfect reason to talk to a therapist.

  • That's a question for a psychiatrist or your doctor, and it's different for everyone. Some people benefit from medication, therapy, or both. We collaborate with prescribers and support you in whatever path makes sense for you. Therapy works, medication works, and most of the time they work better together.

  • Everyone's timeline is different. Some people feel shifts in a few months. Others work longer-term, especially if depression has been part of their story for years. We'll check in regularly about what you're noticing and adjust as you go.

  • Both. We offer virtual therapy for Texas residents and in-person sessions at our Austin location. Many people find that online works great for their life. Others prefer in-person. You get to choose.

  • Yes, most major plans. We can verify your coverage before your first session so you know what to expect cost-wise. Sessions range from $75 to $190. Learn more on our Cost & Coverage page.

  • Start with virtual sessions. Depression is real, and some days the barrier to leaving home is genuinely too high. We meet you there. As you feel stronger, you can always switch to in-person if you want to.

You don't have to carry this alone

Depression is a liar. It tells you that you're the problem, that nothing will change, that you should just handle it yourself. None of that is true. What's true is that you deserve support, you deserve to feel better, and healing is possible.

Our therapists have spent years helping people find their way through depression. We know how hard it is to reach out. We know that even reading this far took energy you weren't sure you had. That matters. You matter.

Let's talk about what might help. No pressure, no judgment. Just a real conversation with someone who gets it.
